One of the most fun moments in cinema in recent memory was the reveal that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts was leading into the long-rumoured Transformers/GI Joe crossover movie/universe we’ve been waiting years for.
You might recall that, at the end of the movie Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos), the human hero of the story, was asked, after his adventures with the Transformers, if he’d like to join GI Joe. This was a very fun way to end the movie, setting up the Hasbro shared universe that has had a few false starts so far but since its release last summer, there’s been no further news, rumours or updates.
Until now.
Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura was recently asked about the future of bringing the Joes and the Robots in Disguise together, to which he replied he had no idea but never fear, “I know we are going to deliver on the promise we made,” he added.
Forget Jurassic Park, Tyrese Gibson wants to see the Fast & Furious/Transformers crossover
As for how the crossover came to be kicked off in Rise of the Beasts, director Steven Caple Jr explained: “Yeah, it was figuring out a way to use the G.I. Joe technology because they’re known for their tech.
“I was like, ‘Maybe we don’t have to go through the classic characters like Snake Eyes and Duke and all these other characters. Maybe there’s a way we can use other characters that haven’t been utilized as much.’ There’s different series and editions and different factions of G.I. Joe as well,” Caple Jr. said.
“There’s G.I. Joe: Renegades and different branches of it, too. So I started to play with that, and I pitched versions of it to the studio and the producers. I pitched a direction I wanted to go in and ways to branch out the universe in general. Transformers movies have scope and size, but we’ve been spending a lot of time here on Earth, so I just think there’s more out there.
“Even in the graphic novels for Transformers, there’s other planets and things like that, and I was like, ‘We’re just thinking too small.’ So, if we’re going to do movie number eight and nine and ten, maybe there’s a way to make this all more expansive and branch out.”
To me, I think that the Hasbro universe kicking off with Transformers and leading into GI Joe makes sense but I also feel that these two added together opens the door for a third Hasbro property I’ve waited decades to see on the big screen, MASK. If GI Joe [and bad guys Cobra] take Transformers tech, they could have transforming vehicles or Mobile Armoured Strike Kommand AKA MASK. Just sayin’.
Since you’re here, Di Bonaventura has also confirmed that another live-action Transformers movie, unconnected to any that have come before, is still happening.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura drops loads of details on upcoming Transformers animated movie
Blue Beetle’s director Ángel Manuel Soto has been developing a standalone Transformers movie for a while now but there’s no movement on it yet: “We’re waiting for the script is where we’re going. Thank you for asking. We don’t know yet, so we have to read a script. We don’t have one yet,” said Di Bonaventura.
As well as all this Transformers goodness, we’re also still waiting for an official release date and/or trailer for the highly anticipated animated origins movie Transformers One (details below).
So, there you have it, GI Joe and Transformers will be standing side-by-side on the big screen soon. Probably.
