With the very powerful We Live In Time currently playing in cinemas here in the UK, having seen it a few days ago, I was – as I often do – wondering when or if we’ll see Andrew Garfield back as Spider-man any time soon.. he’s still the best Spider-man and Peter Parker and probably the best actor to have played the role.
And it seems that I’m not the only one wondering.
In a new interview, the 41-year-old speaks about returning as everyone’s favorite Wall-Crawler and it’s a big negative… but we’re not too disheartened.
Aware of the rumors that he’s returning alongside Tom Holland and Toby Maguire in the MCU Avengers: Secret Wars movie, the star says that he’s not involved: “I’m gonna disappoint you,” he replied when asked, going on: “Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.”
RUMOUR: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-man set for MCU’s Secret Wars
The star is referring to the times he denied he was returning to the role when rumours abounded that he was coming back for Spider-man: No Way Home, saying he had never been contacted, even when images of him, which he said were fake, on set appeared online: “I would’ve gotten a call by now, that’s all I’m saying,” the star said in May 2021, adding: “I don’t want to ruin anything. Maybe they’re going to call me and say, ‘Hey, people want this!’ Maybe it’s a market research thing…”
But then, of course, this happened:
And the fandom lost its collective mind! So, yeah, his denying it doesn’t hold the water it once did as he’s now officially the Spidey who cried wolf… or maybe it’s just that he was so damned good, that we all just really, really want him back.
In the new interview, he was asked if he’d still do a big franchise like Spider-man again (as he’s more concentrating on ‘serious’ movies these days), to which he replied in the positive: “If it felt in line with my soul and was gonna be fun. Maybe I’m gonna have like five kids at some point, and I’m gonna need to start saving up for the school tuition or something.”
The fan/audience/critics response to having both Garfield and Maguire back in No Way Home was off the chart and while the movie itself was far from great, their presence made it a much bigger affair due to the love for these actors’ portrayals of Spidey, I find it hard to believe that MArvel/Disney aren’t aware of this and haven’t pursued the duo’s return to the series.
I don’t think Garfield is done with Spider-man and I certainly don’t think Spider-man is done with him.
Thoughts?
