If there’s one trilogy I’d love to see wrapped up, it’s Guillermo Del Toro and Ron Perlman’s Hellboy trilogy.
Planned as three movies, director DelToro and star Perlman brought the Dark Horse Comics character to life in 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army and while there was also two fun, in-canon animated movies, the story was never finished with The Golden Army failing to be as big as it had hoped.
A fan of proper horror and film-making, the movies were a delight of make-up, animatronics and prosthetics and hold up amazingly well to this day and, despite the series being rebooted in 2019 by the underwhelming David Harbour-led Hellboy (although Perlman revealed in 2020 that he was offered the movie but only wanted to do it if DelToro returned), fans have been crying out for an end to the tale.
Ron Perlman not keen to play Hellboy again… but feels they owe the fans the trilogy closer
And so had Perlman, despite his age, saying last year: “Am I eager to do Hellboy 3? No, I’m 71 f—ing years old. We owe this to the fans. And we should give it to them because it would be an epic conclusion. So Guillermo, if you’re reading, I’m not done pounding you to get this f-cking thing done.”
So far, there’s been no movement on a third movie and despite it looking less and less likely to ever happen, Perlman is still keen to go one last time; speaking to Geek House Show, below, the star says: “If we were to make the third movie of the trilogy, I would love to do that, yeah. It was meant to be three movies, so I would go back and do it if we could finish the trilogy. But those are the only circumstances.”
With a new reboot coming next year (probably), called Hellboy: The Crooked Man with Jack Kesy as the titular hero, it looks less and less likely that Hellboy III will ever happen but we fans know that there’s always hope and we will cling to it until the bitter end.
