Seth McFarlane discusses Ted season 3, potential third Ted movie and The Orville season 4

With Peacock still enjoying massive success with Ted season 2, it was a shock last month when rumours emerged that there were no plans, from Peacock or creator/star Seth McFarlane, to make a third season. But now, McFarlane is going back on that and saying he’s toying with a third season AND a possible movie.

Speaking at the Ted panel at Deadline Contenders TV, McFarlane said that he would be happy to bring back Ted for more distasteful but hilarious adventures, making it clear that should it not happen, it’s because of Peacock alone: “It really is up to Peacock with their, you know, vast amounts of big Scrooge McDuck money that they dive into every day.

“I think all of us, in some form or another, whether it’s a Season 3 of Ted or a direct-to-Peacock feature with this cast, is something I think we’d all be up for. It’s all on the table.”

Ohhhhh, a third Ted movie with the TV cast is on the table too? Nice.

It is important to note here that Ted is an extremely expensive series to make, but with the success and ratings it’s getting, it seems like a no-brainer to make more.

However, while more live-action Ted is a bit hazy at the moment, McFarlane is keen to reveal that the star-studded animated Ted series is almost ready to go too: “It’s only fitting that it all comes back around to the animated show, the first season of which is getting close to completion as far as the production cycle,” MacFarlane said of the new show, referring to the fact that the first Ted movie was pitched as an animated feature.

With the Ted live-action series being a prequel to the movies, the animated show picks up after the events of Ted 2: “So it’s Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, Jessica Barth, all the folks from the original films, and it’s really funny. They’ve just done a phenomenal job. It’s joyful, at this point in my career, to get something off the ground and then watch it take shape under different stewardship. Brad and Paul [executive producers Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh] have turned this thing into something that is fun for me to watch.”

Reflecting on Ted and the family dynamic that makes the show so great, McFarlane says: ”The wonderful thing about a character-driven show is that the possibilities are endless, right?”

While we’re discussing Seth McFarlane shows, what’s happening with The Orville, McFarlane’s better than modern Star Trek homage to Star Trek?

“I will be honest with you: Season four is written. It’s just a question of when we have the time to produce it.

The 10 scripts are done,” he goes on, adding. “I’m the problem…  with all the other stuff we have in the works. But we can hit the ground running when it happens.”

Luke Skywalker animated series coming? Is this why Mara Jade is a no-go character for Star Wars writers?

McFarlane being the problem of The Orville’s crazy production schedule, is something that was echoed in 2023 when star Adrianne Palicki, who plays Cmdr Kelly Grayson, cast doubt on her returning should more be made, saying: “It became an actual, real issue because there would be so much time in between seasons. Seth wanted to write everything himself, so it would just take so much time. I loved so many things about it. I think it was the process that was hard.”

So, a Ted movie and season 3 are on the table after all, and McFarlane is itching to do more on The Orville… It’s great that he wants to oversee his properties, ensuring they’re exactly as he wants, but it does seem like it can make production an issue.

Anyway, more Ted and Orville, do you want it? Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!
