A few weeks ago we reported that, because of a crazy rights issue or something, the Child’s Play franchise is continuing as is AND getting a remake!
Aaaaaand…. we have some details on the reboot and it sounds, em, rebooted.
So fans of the original series will recall that in the first 1988 (thirty years!?) movie serial killer Charles ‘Chucky’ Lee Ray, played by Brad Douriff, was cornered in a toy shop and, with his dying breath, he used black magic to transfer his soul into the nearest thing… a Good Guys doll.
So he became a living doll called, yup, Chucky.
And that was the beginning of the Child’s Play series and we’re seven movies in.
So, what can the remake do that the original didn’t? Well, try this…
The new Chucky is not a possessed toy but rather it’s “A defective ‘Buddy doll’ whose programming code was hacked so that he has no limitations to learning and also violence.”
A character in the movie is described as a “Chinese factory worker who commits suicide shortly after re-programming a Buddy doll to have no limitations.”
So, yeah, Chucky is now a Buddy doll, not a Good Guys doll and rather than being a serial killer he’s… murderous A.I?
Well, on the plus side, the original series is moving ahead and there’s even talk of a TV show. So you can pretend this remake isn’t happening.
There’s a good chance that’ll be our plan.
