Two weeks ago Marvel movie boss Kevin Feige confirmed that the upcoming Sony Spider-man movies were not part of the MCU (here), then rather bafflingly Sony boss Amy Pascal said that the movies – Venom, Silver and Black, Mysterio and more – will run alongside the MCU (here), leaving fans a little confused by what was going on.
Now, Feige and Pascal have both come out to make it clear that the Sony and Marvel universes are NOT related.
“Right now, Spidey is in the MCU and it’s just Spidey,” says Feige,
“Civil War, Homecoming, we’ve already shot a lot of Tom Holland’s scenes in the upcoming Avengers films, and we’re just starting to solidify our plans for Homecoming 2 – we won’t call it that, whatever it is – which is exciting because it’ll be the first MCU movie after untitled Avengers in 2019.
“It’ll be the way Civil War informed everything in Homecoming, those movies will launch him off into a very new cinematic universe at that point. Those five movies are we’re focusing on. [Sony] have rights to other characters, and I think they’re being very smart in saying ‘We have to make a great Venom movie.’ They’re off to a good start hiring Tom Hardy.”
Spider-man himself, Tom Holland, added to this: “It’s very exciting. I think Tom Hardy will really play that character with, you know, a lot of energy, a lot of life. It can be a very cool movie. It’s not something I know about or involved in. As of now, I’m just focusing on Spider-Man 1 and a little bit of Avengers — but I don’t know anything about that movie.”
So Holland is adamant that he’s not involved in the Sony movies. And we’re still retry disappointed.
Adding to this, Pascal has now been quoted as saying that she was talking about the characters all being related IN THE COMICS and not the movies, which she clearly wasn’t (just listen to the interview in the link above) so this sounds like a little bit of damage control… that said, we reckon there’s more to it all and wouldn’t rule out connections at some point in the future…

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May, alongside Marvel veterans Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Chris Evans as Captain America. New additions to the cast include Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Bokeem Woodbine, Tyne Daly, Michael Barbieri, Abraham Attah, Hannibal Buress, Kenneth Choi, Angourie Rice, Michael Chernus, Michael Mando, Logan Marshall-Green and Jennifer Connelly.
