Sony planning a new Black Cat movie with Amazing Spider-man 2’s Felicity Jones returning to the role?

June 6th, 2021 by Marc Comments

Cast your mind back four years when we last heard that the planned Sony Marvel movie Black Cat and Silver Sable had signed a director and had an official title (here), yet shortly after the plug was pulled on the movie and it seemed that Spider-man’s two beautiful, ass-kicking ladies were no longer set to appear on the big screen.

Yet, cast your mind back even further when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s Felicity Jones played the woman who would become Black Cat, Felicia Hardy, in The Amazing Spider-man 2 opposite Andrew Garfield in 2013 (here). At that point plans were afoot to explode the Spider-verse then, including a Black Cat movie starring Jones, but sadly, Amazing Spider-man 2 didn’t make enough money and that all crashed and burned.

The Silver Sable and Black Cat movie was planned to be part of the Venom/Morbius/Kraven The Hunter universe (here) before it died the death too… two universes, two failed Black Cats.

So, what is the solution? Well, you slam those universes together much as Sony/Marvel are doing with the upcoming Spider-man: No Way Home.

For those living under a rock, the upcoming third MCU/Sony Spider-man movie is going to feature villains from previous Spider-man iterations including Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx’s Electro (and yes, we strongly suspect that we’ll see Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire returning too along with other ‘classic’ characters) much as JK Simmons returned as J Jonah Jameson in Far From Home.

No doubt there will be an explanation for why this has happened, but it certainly means that, yes, we could see Jones return to a role that she played in 2013.

The script, according to the new report, is being penned by “an indie writer-director who saw success with a debut in 2017 and another hit in 2019” and the movie will be “an origin story for the character and will feature Chameleon as the primary antagonist, with Blaze appearing as an Enforcer – a small team of career criminals based in New York City which has seen Green Goblin and Sandman among its ranks”.

This part is interesting as there has been rumours that Sandman and Green Goblin will both be in No Way Home in the form of Thomas Hayden-Church and Willem DaFoe (here), so a bigger plan involving cameos and Blaze could be afoot.

Furthermore, “the plot will see Felicia Hardy recuperating from the disappearance of her father, Walter Hardy, a world-renowned cat burglar. His absence results in Felicia needing to fend for herself — but over time, a larger conspiracy unfolds. The report suggests that Felicia’s origin story has been altered somewhat, with a change that may upset long-time fans, though it allows for the story to be streamlined.”

While casting has not begun, it seems that Hardy is who Sony want for the role and, for the record, we would love to see it too and I cannot help but be excited by this merging of worlds and realities in the MCU, with the report saying this would indeed continue the story of the Hardy we met in Amazing Spider-man 2… which makes us wonder if we may yet see Andrew Garfield’s Spider-man/Peter Parker returning to the role after being unfairly kicked out all those years ago.

Anyway, that’s the skinny and all we know so far but I want to hear what you all think. Personally, I love the idea of continuing the Amazing Spider-man world in some shape and form. What say you guys?
