Spider-man 3 star says he’s heard rumours of a Maguire/Raimi Spider-man 4

August 20th, 2023 by Marc Comments

Ever since the return of Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective Spider-men in 2021’s Spider-man: No Way Home, fans have been clamoring to get any grain of news about if or when we’ll see them again.

I recently reported that I’m hearing Garfield’s Spidey could be back in the MCU’s Secret Wars movie in 2027 (here) but what of Maguire?

When Sam Raimi, director of Spider-man 1, 2 and 3, joined the MCU to direct the greatly underappreciated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness last year, fans seemed to hold out hope that maybe, just maybe with Maguire and Raimi both now attached to the MCU, that Spider-man 4 project could be happening and, aside from rumors and speculation, we have heard very little. Until now.

Wait… is Spider-man in Invincible Season 2? Em, the evidence seems to say ‘yes’!

Speaking at a press event for his Twisted Metal series on Peacock (which is surprisingly great by the way), Sandman himself, Spider-man 3 star Thomas Haden Church has intimated that he’s heard whispers of Maguire and Rainim bringing ol’ Webhead back to the screen.

“There’s always been some kind of…I’ve heard rumors…that Sam Raimi was going to do another [Spider-Man movie] with Tobey [Maguire] and if that happens, I would probably campaign to maybe at least do a cameo,” Church revealed.

Church’s Sandman appeared in No Way Home but it was a reduced role and was mostly done with CGI, although the actor is still in great shape and even after all those years – Spider-man 3 is 16 years old – he could easily return as Sandman AKA Flint Marko, should he be asked.

RUMOUR: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-man set for MCU’s Secret Wars

Is there anything to this? Church doesn’t confirm where he heard the rumors and perhaps it’s just stuff he’s seen online but i believe that’s unlikely given that he mentions it and is clearly still interested in the character all these years later.

As for Raimi? Well, he was asked about returning to Spider-man and he certainly seems game: “I’ve come to realise after making Doctor Strange that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, any team-ups.

“I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible. I don’t really have a story or a plan. I don’t know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don’t know what their thoughts are about that. I haven’t really pursued that. But it sounds beautiful.”

If we’ve learned anything in recent years, it’s that anything is possible these days and, honestly, after the reception of No Way Home, I’d be very surprised if we never saw Maguire – and Garfield – back as Spider-man.

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter and Instagram
