Bit of an upset for the MCU this week, gang.
As we’ve known for a while now, Jon Watts, director of the three MCU Spider-man movies, has been attached to direct the MCU’s Fantastic Four movie (here) but, joining Fast X’s Justin Lin who walker from the Fast and Furious franchise earlier this week (here), he’s no longer attached to the project.
However, unlike Lin, it seems that Watts is just stepping back as he needs a break from the Marvel pressure, having just delivered the Spider-man trilogy.
Marvel heads Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito said in an accompanying statement: “Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-Man films has been a true pleasure. We were looking forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point down the road.”
While Watts’ next project was set to be Fantastic Four, we understand he’s working on an Apple TV thriller starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney. We fully expect the Fantastic Four to move ahead as planned with a new talent behind the lens although no release date has ever been touted.
We’re also hearing that Watts is still attached to the next Spider-man outing in the MCU.
