Taika Waititi says his Star Wars movie is not confirmed yet…

July 1st, 2022 by Marc Comments

During Star Wars Celebration Anaheim a few weeks ago it was revealed that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie is likely heading to cinemas for Christmas 2023 and it would be a whole new story not relying on anything in Star Wars we’ve seen or visited before (here), however, on the press tour for Thor: Love and Thunder, Waititi cast a little bit of a shadow on the movie even happening.

But don’t worry, we’re pretty sure it’ll happen. Probably.

“I’m trying to write the ‘Star Wars’ idea at the moment,” Waititi said.

“I’ve got to see how that goes, because once I submit it, that might determine when it gets made or if it gets made, even.”

Now, this could reflect Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy’s comment that nothing was “locked in yet”.

Now, while I love Waititi’s work in general – Jojo Rabbit is one of my favourite movies of the last few years – I’m worried about him getting Star Wars as his humour is very overpowering and, if you look at his Thor movies, he lets it dominate the tone of the movie; as much as I love the visuals of Thor: Ragnarok, I felt it made a joke of Thor and made the movie feel disjointed from the rest of the MCU.

That said…

Waititi has also worked on The Mandalorian, including on directing duties, and that show is the current cornerstone of the Star Wars universe, so he certainly has that going for him.

So, with all that said, while I’m a little apprehensive, I also excited to see what he would do with Star Wars… what say you all?

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
