The Labyrinth sequel has found a very interesting director…

It’s been no secret that Tristar have been looking at making a second Labyrinth movie (here), with many fearing a reboot was in progress.

However, we now have some more interesting details on the sequel to the 1986 David Bowie classic from Muppets genius Jim Henson.

It seems that the man who rebooted Evil Dead and made the pretty damned awesome Don’t Breathe, Fede Alvarez, is set to direct the movie after he’s done with The Girl in the Spider’s Web, the sequel to the Daniel Craig Girl With The Dragon Tattoo movie.

Word is that the new Labyrinth movie will be a new story set in the same universe as the original movie… does this mean it’s a ‘Labyrinth Universe’? We wouldn’t rule it out with early word being that the current idea for the movie is a spin-off rather than a direct sequel.

The original saw Jennifer Connolly accidentally making a deal with David Bowie’s Troll King to take her baby brother. She then must go through a Labyrinth to rescue the babe while facing off against and befriending all manners of weird and wonderful characters and creatures. It was the last movie directed by Jim Henson.

In a statement the studio said: “Labyrinth is one of the seminal movies from my childhood that made me fall in love with filmmaking. I couldn’t be more thrilled to expand on Jim Henson’s mesmerizing universe and take a new generation of moviegoers back into the Labyrinth.”

We’re still ages away from casting news or release dates but with Alvarez as a very exciting – and unexpected – choice, we’re pretty interested to see where this goes…

Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
