In summer 2001 the world was given a teaser for the May 2002 Spider-man movie from Sam Raimi and starring Toby Maguire that became history… for all the wrong reasons, sadly.
The trailer – which, by the way, is brilliant – features a bank heist in which the robbers make a daring escape in a helicopter before being pulled back through the city and the reveal is one of the all-time greats as the helicopter is snared in a giant web between two buildings – then we get the reveal of Spider-man’s mask and then he swings through the city. The end. Perfect.
So what was wrong? Well, the buildings the helicopter is snared between are the twin towers. and just a couple of short months after the trailer debuted, the towers were destroyed in the terror attacks that claimed the lives of thousands.
And, understandably, the trailer was pulled from everywhere.
But now it’s back, thanks to YouTuber YoshiKillerS2 who has done a wonderful job of restoring it to its full glory. This is a piece of cinematic history and, while the location undoubtedly has some terrible associations, the trailer has nothing to do with that and should be enjoyed as it was always intended.
