Zack Snyder confirms Brainiac and Kryptonians were considered for Man of Steel sequel, says Warners are ‘aggressively anti-Snyder’

You may have noticed by now that Zack Snyder is very much the man of the moment.

Be it his Zack Snyder’s Justice League which finally arrived in March or his return to the zombie genre, Army of the Dead that arrives later this month, there’s no denying all eyes are on him right now.

And it really seems that, even if WB decide not to go for a Justice League sequel, the fans of his DC saga have be vindicated as it seems that, due to JL being released, his take on Superman, Man of Steel, is having something of a renaissance.

In a new interview, the director was asked if he had had plans for a sequel (even though at this stage, with all that’s going on, it’s very unlikely to ever happen).

“We talked about a Brainiac movie,” he confirms.

“But I do think that the Kryptonians that are in the Phantom Zone are probably still around. And there was always a possibility for their return. Faora and whoever’s left. That was a thing that was always out there that we talked about as a possible sequel. I just think it’s best to give Superman these extaterrestrial challenges because I think you’ve got to be careful with — other than Lex Luthor, because, of course, you have to continue with Lex, because Lex is his real nemesis — but I think you really have to look outside of the Earth for challenges for him because of how powerful he is.”

For a long time, fans had hoped to see the Kryptonian Faora return as her character and actress Antje Traue were great in the franchise (here) but, had they not, Brainiac – again rumoured many times to be the big bad for the sequel – would have been a great choice.

And, again, Snyder shows that he does understand Superman but saying that Lex is his true nemisis but for physical threat, the bad needs to come from space.

One of the things I loved about his Superman (and Batman) was how he went against the Marvel mould and gave the heroes a real-world feel, something he addresses in the interview: “I think Henry [Cavill] is a great Superman. I have a great time working with Henry, and I think that also, we endeavored to make him in Man of Steel, sort of a modern Superman in that, in his relationship to society and/or the modern world, we did that now, and like, what would happen if… And it’s kind of what the movie is about, frankly. Man of Steel‘s about, what if we really had a Superman? What would it mean? You know?”

Yes, Zack, we know exactly what you mean.

However, for those of you hoping for a JL sequel – and we count ourselves in there – Snyder says that keeping the hope and support alive is the best way of ever even possibly getting a sequel”

When asked if we should keep hoping, Snyder says ‘yes’ but he goes on to say that Warner Bros has been “aggressively anti-Snyder” and, given the revelations about Joss Whedon and has treatment of Justice League stars Gal Gadot and Ray Fisher, it seems that Warners truly backed the wrong horse on all levels when it came to their DC universe.

Meanwhile, here’s a new clip from Army of the Dead which arrives on Netflix on May 21st and looks absolutely great.
