FIRST LOOK: Images released from new Quantum Leap as Ernie Hudson talks show’s legacy

With the news that the Quantum Leap reboot has been given a full series order at NBC (here), we finally have our first look at the actual show.

The image above has the new team at Project Quantum Leap, including one of our favourite people, Mr Ernie Hudson as Herbert ‘Magic’ Williams, a character we met in the original series!

In a new interview, Hudson talks about joining the legacy of Quantum Leap and how it’s now unlike another franchise he’s famous for: “What I love about Ghostbusters is grandparents watch it with their little grandkids and everybody finds something to laugh about and try to figure out,” Hudson says.

Continues after video:

“This show [Quantum Leap] … a lot of people tell me they’ve watched it with their dads or [what have you]. This is the kind of show that crosses generations and it’s shown that it stands up to that reason.”

The new images, below, showcase the series’ new lead, Raymond Lee as Dr Ben Song, who leaps into the year 1989 in the new series’ opening episode, the same year the original series premiered. In the new series Song will be lost in time just as Sam Beckett [Scott Bakula] was in the original series and word is that, while Bakula is currently not attached (here), his character of Sam will be the driving force behind Quantum Leap being reinstated.

Everything you need to know about the new Quantum Leap series

Hudson goes on: “This is really an important show in the sense that it sorts of opened the idea of not just time travel, but how we’re connected in that oneness. I can be in your world and experience what you’re going through and… just how the world comes together in a really special way. This show did that in a very special way. So, to get the chance to come back and to broaden that idea is really, really exciting.”

We’re very iffy about a Quantum Leap series without Scott Bakula and ordinarily would write it off completely, but Hudson’s involvement has got our attention, we just hope it’s enough as the original series was very, very important to me as a kid and I know I’m not alone in that.

It’s been 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished.

Now a new team has been assembled to restart the project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.

Embracing the iconic series’ signature blend of humor, heart, and history, this reboot expands upon the Quantum Leap universe, taking us on a thrilling journey across space and time, exploring the timeless notion of what it’s like to walk in another person’s shoes, and the enduring value of changing lives for the better.

Lee plays the lead, Dr. Ben Seong, a world-renowned physicist working on a time-travel project known as Quantum Leap who gets stuck in the late 1980s with amnesia after using the technology.

Hudson portrays Herbert “Magic” Williams, a Vietnam veteran and head of the time travel project at Quantum Leap. Using a bit of politicking and his military know-how to keep the Pentagon at bay, Magic buys the team some time to rescue Ben but expects answers once he’s back.

Quantum Leap is set to premiere this fall on NBC.
