In one of the most extreme cases of ‘about bloody timeism’ in the history of televison, FX has ordered a pilot of Y: The Last Man.
Michael Green (“American Gods,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Logan”) and Aida Mashaka Croal (“Luke Cage,” “Turn”) are set to serve as co-showrunners and will executive produce alongside Melina Matsoukas (“Insecure,” “Master of None,” “Beyonce: Formation”) who will also direct the pilot
First published in 2002 it is nominally the story of Yorick Brown (and his monkey Ampersand) the only man to survive when all living mammals with a Y chromosome simultaneously die, the book ran for 60 issues and received 3 Eisner awards and the 1stHugo award for best graphic novel. The book series was an exploration of gender, race, class and post-apocalyptic survival.
Y: The last man has been long in development with multiple studios holding the rights over the last few years New Line had been trying to develop the story into a movie until they lost the rights to FX who thankfully are taking the story to the small screen where long arc’s and character development can flourish.
If this is done well and cast correctly this could be the next big genre TV with the cross over appeal all the studios are looking for.
