Gina Carano fired from Star Wars by Disney/Lucasfilm

February 11th, 2021 by Marc Comments

Bad news today for fans of The Mandalorian as it seems Lucasfilm/Disney has severed ties with star Gina Carrano who played Cara Dune on the hit series.

Word came in this morning that, following a ‘Twitter storm’ (no, we’re not getting into it), the star has been let go and will not be returning for season 3 of the show.

In a statement, a Lucasfilm spokesperson said: “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

Carano has been the centre of a twitter storm for some time, with many wanting her fired from the Disney series over tweets she had put out into the interwebs and now it looks like it has finally worked.

It’s been going on for a while at Disney/Lucasfilm too as we’re hearing reports that when the Rangers of the New Republic series was announced at D23 last year, it was to be announced that Dune would be the main character in the series – which seemed obvious given how here character was set up in The Mandalorian Season 2 – but they held back due to the online ‘outrage’.

Personally, I like Carano and I loved her as Cara Dune in the show as she finally embodied the Star Wars archetype of badass female that Disney seemed to struggle with in their sequel movies and it’s no mystery why she quickly became a fan favourite.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming days and weeks – will it result in a drop in viewers? Unlikely to be honest, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it did.

What say you all? I want to hear your thoughts on Carano’s apparent firing.
