Some new details from the upcoming Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance series from Netflix, which is a prequel to Jim Henson’s original dark masterpiece, The Dark Crystal.
And a cool little piece of news about the original movie too.
The new series (check out the teaser here) will be directed by The Incredible Hulk’s Louis Leterrier who recently talked about the project and revealed that the project will be made old school and the only CGI will be used to remove puppeteers from the green screen backgrounds. Yes!
“We’re not using CGI on this one. It’s puppets, man. Puppets!” Leterrier said.
“People have asked what the newest technology we’re bringing to this is, and I say, ‘Well it’s actually really old technology: green screen.’ We’re removing puppeteers where they are physically moving the puppets from the outside. But Jim didn’t have the ability to do that at the time of the movie. So even though that’s a really old visual effects technique, it’s an advance on the film. We were so pleased that it’s still pure puppetry because if you take the puppeteers out, they’re still moved by the puppeteers.”
Lisa Henson, Jim’s daughter, also revealed some details on the story: “In the original movie, Jen and Kira stop at the Wall of Destiny and they see the ruins of what was once a beautiful Gefling culture, and we took that as a jumping of point for the whole series.
“What was that culture, what was lost, what was that beautiful Gefling civilization? It’s very developed, with a big canvas with many different group of Gelflings…it’s rich.”
“Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.”
We promised a little tad-bit from the original movie too and, if you already knew this we apologise, but it seems that the original movie from Jim Henson was never meant to be in English but rather in the language of the Skeksis… and there’s a video of what that would have been like, and holy crap it’s unnerving!
Check it out below:
it’s wild that “being in english” was one of the compromises jim henson made to sell the dark crystal to hollywood.
