With the news that Michael Keaton was looking set to reprise his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne in the upcoming Flash movie, there has been much pondering about whether or not this could mean he’s back in a bigger way moving forward.
And now a new report says that yes, there’s much, much bigger plans for Keaton’s Batman.
We have heard talk that DC/Warners/HBO Max may be set to make a Batman movie based on the Batman Beyond series before (here) with word being original Batman/Batman Returns director Tim Burton set to return.
In the Batman Beyond animated series (and later comics), Bruce Wayne retired as the Dark Knight after almost killing a criminal on the job one night due to being so old he’d lost the upper hand in a fight, however, he soon took a new Batman under his (leathery) wing and Terry McGinnis became the new Dark Knight, guided by Bruce Wayne’s mentor. The series was superb and for years fans have cried out for a live-action adaptation with Keaton in the older Batman role.
And now it seems we may be getting just that.
When Keaton was originally attached to the return, word was he was set to become the DC’s version of Nick Cage, stepping in as a mentor to the upcoming new DC heroes, but I’m wondering if this news got mixed up with the actual news which may be that he’s to be the mentor for a new Batman as the new report is that HBO Max want him to commit to a Batman Beyond series after he’s set up back in the role in The Flash.
And… oh, boy!
The reports says that: “Michael Keaton has already signed on to return as Batman in The Flash movie, and he’s just signed a deal with HBO that’ll see him play Bruce Wayne in a future series.”
An additional report stated he “signed a deal with HBO Max to star as Bruce Wayne in a Batman series which will be based on Batman Beyond”.
With another source adding “We’re all very excited over here”.
If true, this could be as big a deal for HBO Max as Zack Snyder’s Justice League, in fact, it may even be bigger as Keaton’s Batman has truly got fans of all ages on board.
Seeing Keaton return as a different version of the Caped Crusader would be exciting too, Keaton as a mentor to a new Batman is something we’ve wanted for years and the idea of getting it – as a series or a movie – is so very, very exciting.
Perhaps we’ll see his final nights as Batman in the Flash movie as we heard he’d be suiting up in that movie (here), leaving the door open for the Batman Beyond series to pick up with him finding the next Batman.
Whatever it is, if it’s true, I’m officially giddy now…
What say you all? Would you subscribe to HBO Max for this? Let me hear your thoughts, gang.
