If, like us here at FTN HQ, you’re completely obsessing over Netflix’s latest show, Squid Game, then we have some good (hopefully) news for you.
The Korean series is, honestly, one of the most addictive bits of TV we’ve seen in a long time and it – no spoilers – ends in such a way that a second season is certainly possible, so from the second we ended our binge, we’ve been googling like crazy to see if anyone has any news on a return to the games… and now, finally, we have some news.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who wrote and directed season one, is considering a second season… although he hasn’t set plans in motion yet.
“I don’t have well-developed plans for Squid Game 2,” he says in a new interview, “It is quite tiring just thinking about it.
“But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”
We can only imagine how difficult writing and directing a show with such a concept and so many important characters must be.
He goes on to discuss where the idea came from and how the show reflects our modern society as a whole: “I wanted to write a story that was an allegory or fable about modern capitalist society, something that depicts an extreme competition, somewhat like the extreme competition of life.”
One of the things that struck me most about the show and indeed, made it so engrossing, was the characters and how, despite our cultural and language differences, they were completely relatable and believable. This was no accident, with Dong-hyuk saying: “I wanted it to use the kind of characters we’ve all met in real life. As a survival game it is entertainment and human drama.
“The games portrayed are extremely simple and easy to understand. That allows viewers to focus on the characters, rather than being distracted by trying to interpret the rules.”
All I know is that I was completely in love and obsessed with this series and I really wanted to get to see where it goes next… so I hope Dong-hyuk can get that writers room together as soon as possible because this is a story that needs a lot more exploring.
If you’re not watching Squid Game, then you need to get on that asap.
