TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Stargirl Season 1 Episode 8: Shiv Part 2

July 8th, 2020 by Todd Black Comments

So, good news, bad news time. The good news is that if you’re a fan of Stargirl you’ll be happy to know that the CW has picked up the exclusive rights to Season 2, to thus, we’ll be getting more of Stargirl. However, the quality of the episodes in my opinion? Not improving…and getting dumber.

“Shiv Part 2” was something I was honestly looking forward to in regards to how they were going to deal with the Shiv situation as well as the fallout from Courtney getting nearly beaten to death by Cindy. And to their credit, they did a solid start to this at first, and then, like usual, it fell off the rails.

Pat willing to crash his beloved car in order to go and give Courtney the plausible excuse for her injuries. Which for a brief moment you think that she’s FINALLY going to listen to Pat and do as he says. But the MOMENT he brings up her mother and telling her the truth she freaks. Not because it’ll hurt her mother, or cause her to worry about Courtney’s safety. Oh no. Rather, it’s because she’s afraid that Barbara will go and take the staff and costume from her.

How selfish can you be?

And sadly, that wasn’t the end of the stupidity. Because the rest of the JSA decided it would be a “good plan” to use the Dr. Midnite glasses to scan Cindy’s house for clues of her parents powers or whatever.

If I had a week I couldn’t tell them the ways that wouldn’t work.

And the only reason it DID work was because of the drone of a wife that the Dragon King has watching over everything. But apparently she’s willing to flirt with Pat because…why…? Didn’t she just last episode fear the Dragon King’s wrath more than anything?

The whole plan was stupid, and yet, yes, it still got worse. Because despite them leaving in the DAYTIME, Courtney apparently freaks out because she doesn’t hear from Yolanda (and ONLY Yolanda) and decides to attack Shiv in her own home…AT NIGHT. Gee, I wonder what could go wrong there…? Also, how did it take her HOURS to fly to Cindy’s house in a small town in Nebraska without ANYONE reaching out to her?

Seriously, I don’t like ragging on superhero shows, but I call out bull when I see it, and that’s definitely what’s going on here.

And the true crime in all of this is that they could’ve focused on the smaller story of Barbara trying to figure out what to do with Pat and Courtney, and instead she has a few scenes in the beginning and is gone for the rest of the episode. And, AGAIN, the villains come out looking like kings.

Icicle’s continued revenge (which by the way didn’t he say he was done with when he returned to the fold?) was quite literally chilling. As was the way Dragon King handled Shiv and the rise of Brainwave Jr. His explosion of powers at the end was well handled, and it’ll be interesting to see how it’s handled next episode when both sides try to bring him into the fold.

In the end, “Shiv Part 2” was another misstep in something that could’ve really propelled the story forward.
