Big news on the Watchmen TV front as it has been revealed who Jeremy Irons will be playing in the show and, while it’s cracking casting, it’s a big of a head scratcher to fans of the book and Zack Snyder’s movie.
Why?
Well… Irons will reportedly play Adrian Veidt, AKA Ozymandias, played by Matthew Goode in the movie – check out the image above to see just how much the two are alike.
We had heard that Irons would be “an aging and imperious lord of a British manor”.
Veidt, in the comic was a master figure and genius who, after trying to take over the world, died in the original story so it seems likely here that the series will either try to undo the end of the original story or perhaps it will be an alternate history of the Watchmen story.
So, what say you all Watchmen fans? Can they possibly change such a crucial part fo the story and remain true to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ masterpiece? We don’t think they can.
But we’d be lying if we said we weren’t curious.
Thoughts?
HBO’s series will be based on the acclaimed DC Comics from Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons.
The show will star Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith and Adelynn Spoon.
This means that Lost’s Damon Lindelof will now be showrunning the superhero series at HBO. And we honestly thing that, despite the news that the series will not be based strictly on the graphic novel, despite the official synopsis saying: “Set in an alternate history where ‘superheroes’ are treated as outlaws, Watchmenembraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.”
We’ll find out who watches the Watchmen in 2019.
