Ok, Scream fans, another cool article about Stu Macher from the original Scream movie is ahead, so strap yourselves in.
So, if you have been following us for a while, you’ll know we’re big, big Scream fans and one of our favourite Scream characters is Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher, one of the first two Ghostfaces in Wes Craven’s original 1996 movie.
Stu died in the movie when Sidney, played by Neve Campbell, dropped a TV on his head – and if you were around in 1996, you know how heavy those were.
But over the years, Stu, it seemed may not have been as dead as first thought. From originally being the villain in Scream 3 to appearing in Scream 2 (yes, really), the ghost – ahem – of Stu has continued to loom over the franchise; we did a full breakdown (before Scream 2022) of just why Stu may still be a returning villain in the series and you can read that here.
But it didn’t end there. In Scream 2022 we got another very cool little hints that Stu may still be out there in the Scream universe (here and here).
But now a final nail in the coffin may have been dealt to the ‘Stu is still alive’ theory.
Rose McGowan has a silly but fun way that she can return to the Scream series
In a new interview, Scream and Scream 2 writer Kevin Williamson was asked about Stu and if he’s still alive and he answered quite decisively, saying: “No, he’s dead.
“I think that started because of the college scene, the frat party scene because he’s standing in the background. He just came to visit set that night.”
Now, we know about the Scream 2 visit and how, as a result of it, Lillard appears in the movie, but Williamson seems to be forgetting or ignoring that Stu was set up to be the bad guy in Scream 3 and, as we show above, how he has had lots of hints and tips in the lore that he’s still alive.
One other thing before you go, safe in the knowledge that Stu is dead, Williamson also said in the past that Hayden Panettiere’s Kirby Reed died in Scream 4 and yet she’s back for next year’s Scream 6.
Oh and one last little detail that may point suggest that Stu is back comes from the franchise’s official Twitter:

It’s good to be back… we know that that is probably the mask – or one of them – from the original movie as a Scream museum features in the new movie but the question is, who is wearing it? The mask isn’t saying it’s good to be back so, could the wearer be? And if so, Stu is the most likely candidate to be wearing it.
Anyways, that’s just my thoughts on it all, what do you think? Should Lillard return to the role after almost 30 years? Let me know your thoughts, gang…
