CONFIRMED: Details on John Wick 5 which is in development along with new spinoffs, TV shows and major video game

May 28th, 2023 by Marc Comments

So, as many of you will know, earlier this year we got the fourth adventure starring Keanu Reeves’ John Wick and, while it was an ambiguously ended adventure in some ways, it did seem to draw a line under the character’s adventures on the big screen.

And look, that’s no bad thing. Having a series as big and as successful as John Wick which has the smarts to give us four solid entries and call it a day is an admirable thing these days – after all, there’s a load of spinoffs, TV shows and more on the horizon – but it seems that the end is only the beginning for Wick.

During Lionsgate’s Q4 2023 earnings call, Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake confirmed that John Wick 5 is coming, while addressing the universe’s expansion through other adventures and stories in that uniquely over-the-top universe.

“We’re now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, but looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there’s clear appetite by the audience,” Drake said.

“What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We’re in development on three others, including [John Wick 5] and including television series, The Continental, will be airing soon. And so, we’re building out the world and when that fifth movie comes, it will be organic – will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.”

I had previously reported that a game was coming as well as more spinoffs on top of The Continental series and Ballerina, so this confirmation is not out of the blue.

I can only assume that Drake doesn’t mean we’ll have a new John Wick movie regularly in the future but rather a John Wick Universe movie, expanding the lore – and there’s some great stuff in the Wick lore – and wider universe, while not necessarily featuring Reeves’ Wick character as is the cast with Ballerina which will Ana de Armas as a Bellerina from the school we saw in John Wick 2 and will feature Reeves in scene in the movie but nothing more and then The Continental which will focus on the New York hotel that is at the centre of the John Wick World in the movies but the series will tell a story set in the 1970s, long before Wick’s adventures… this is all organic and should be who it’s done.

On developing the world and especially a new TV series, director Chad Stahelski said: “Lionsgate has been incredibly supportive on this, and we’re really trying to get a John Wick TV show going. And that would allow me to tell a lot of stories that maybe wouldn’t sustain another ginormous feature, but great characters and great stories that we could do in the short form on TV. Which would be fantastic.

“We’re still working that out, there’s a lot of things to sort out and think about. Do we have enough stories? Do people want to see that? But I’m very open to that format as well. So we’ll see.”

Do people want to see it? Are you serious? Yes, of course we [they] do!

In a recent interview Stahelski said that there’s a load of actors that he would love to see in the John Wick movies or world: “There’s a huge list, but just the first thing that came to mindset was Cillian Murphy. I’m a big ‘Peaky Blinders’ fan. So, you know, I just think Cillian would fit right in. Colin Farrell is fantastic. Charlize Theron when she did ‘Atomic Blonde,’ I saw that went, ‘Oh my God, I gotta work with this woman. She’s awesome. I worked with Michelle Yeoh way back on a commercial years ago, and I’ve been dying to work with her ever since. I’m such a huge fan.

“After ‘Lovecraft Country’ came out Jurnee Smollett was one. These are people that just for some reason click in my head of fitting in the world. And that’s always good.

“There’s a lot, I mean, there are so many great people out there, man. If Robert Downey happened to sit in my chair right here, I’d figure that one out. Peter Dinklage, I was a huge fan of his in ‘Game of Thrones.’ Sean Bean. Some of those guys I think are magical. I’d die for a chance with any of those people.”

I mean, if any of these stars stepped up, I’d watch them in John Wick Universe movies or shows… imagine a Peter Dinklage movie in that world? I don’t care what he would be in it, I’m in already!

Stahelski recently made the point that while these adventures are all set in the same world, it is important that they have their own feel and flavour, which was important when they brought Underworld and Die Hard With A Vengeance’s Len Wiseman in for Ballerina: “Having him on board and approaching some of the action design from a slightly different perspective, meaning the set pieces, the character involvement, how and what he wants to do during the action sequences, makes it kind of fresh.

“So, we’re not just copying ourselves over and over again with gun-fu or something like that. And because the character is different, we’re going to get a different take on things. But as far as the level, the competence or the style of action? Yes. I plan to be there to assist whenever I can. And our 87eleven stunt team will be very actively involved in helping Len in all his action needs.”

While I wasn’t as in love with the fourth John Wick as I hoped I would be, I do still consider myself a fan of the series and I’m very excited for what comes next, especially in the wider universe stories and I would love to see the world explored in comics and novels too (I have the original comic series and it’s not bad) but, as of now, I’m really not sure we need John Wick Chapter 5… What say you all?

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter and Instagram

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
