Deadpool almost had a whole world in Multiverse of Madness! Plus loads of news on Deadpool 3

July 22nd, 2022 by Marc Comments

You may recall that prior to the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness there was a lot of chatter about cameos and surprise appearances. One of the most speculated upon of those was Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool.

After all, we knew Deadpool 3 was coming, the character was owned by Disney at that stage and he even seemed to be teased on one of the movie’s posters (here), heck, we learned that there WAS discussions to have the character appear (here) and, on top of that, he had technically already appeared in the MCU (here):

But now it seems that there was much bigger plans in the Multiverse for Deadpool.

In the Disney+ Marvel Studios: Assembled series, it was revealed that one of the worlds/realities visited by Strange and America Chavez was going to be a Deadpool world, covered in posters of the character as well as Josh Brolin’s Cable – you can see the concept art below (continues after image):

All the images in the concept art are posters used to promote the first two Deadpool movies.

As we saw in the movie, America, played by Xochitl Gomez in the movie, has the ability to run through the Multiverse and we saw her do it several times, with the majority of realities being on screen for seconds (one of the more disappointing parts of the movie, to be honest) and we’re guessing this would have been like that; would it have meant Deadpool would have actually appeared in the movie? Hard to tell but I always felt that if he were to have a cameo in the MCU prior to the third Deadpool movie, that movie was the place to do it.

And speaking of Deadpool 3…

We know the movie will be directed by Shawn Levy (here) but we also have a few new details to go along with that.

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are back writing this third adventure and have spoken about the whole joining the MCU thing, a first for the series, saying “It’s a thrill”.

“It’s an absolute thrill to have the band back together, to have a new backdrop in the MCU with new characters, new villains, that kind of thing. You know, it’s never a marriage we necessarily saw coming—Fox and Disney, that was an external thing [separate] from our storytelling process. But we’re absolutely finding the serendipity and the gold in that situation, or we’re trying to,” says Reese.

When asked about the humour of the movie – the other movies gleefully laughed at Marvel, DC and everything in between and it looks like this time out Deadpool, a master of breaking the third wall, will be having a chuckle at the MCU despite being in it!

“Don’t worry about that,” Reese adds, “[Marvel have] been very supportive with regard to that. Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing, because obviously we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success and they’ve had their own even greater success. So hopefully it’ll be a marriage made in heaven. But we’ve definitely got their support, and that’s a great thing to feel.”

Going on about the MCU in particulate, he adds: “How many movies have they given us? 25? 26? 28? Something like that. We have a treasure trove of things to poke fun at now… and Deadpool’s an equal [opportunist] so everyone’s fair game.”

Regarding Deadpool now being in the MCU when previously he was part of the Fox X-Men movies, it sounds like this will be the same Deadpool and that he may be aware of the new world he’s in – if there’s one character that this will work well with, it’s him – which has us wondering if we’ll see him arrive via, as originally thought, the events of Multiverse of Madness or perhaps No way Home… Reese had this to say: “It’s a wonderful opportunity for fish-out-of-water. Deadpool is a lunatic at the center of a movie. To drop a lunatic into a very sane world, it’s straight butter. It’s going to be really fun.”

We’ve been promised that Deadpool, despite now being in the MCU, will retain his previous R-Rated humour and the duo are adamant that it will and Marvel are fully supportive: “It’s been nothing but, ‘How can we help you?’ What from our universe would you like to use? How can we make your life easy?

“We’re gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool. We’re not… this is not going to be the Disney-fied Deadpool,'”

So, it’ll be R-Rated? “Oh, absolutely,” Reese goes on before being slightly – slightly – less optimistic about it: “They’re not gonna mess with the tone. I mean, I’d never say never, I guess there’s an outside chance, but we’ve always been told it can be R-[rated] and we’re proceeding as if it’s R. We would like it to be R, we always have, so I don’t think that’ll change.”

This is all great news as we’re excited for more Deadpool – Deadpool 2 went straight into my top ten comic book movies of all-time when it came out – and we’re hoping that, with the first two movies (and Logan) hitting Disney+ today, we might get some details about it at this weekend’s SDCC.

Are you all excited for more Wade Wilson? Would you have liked to see Deadpool world in the Doctor Strange sequel? Let me know all your thoughts, gang!
