New Jedi Order movie in development wth Daisy Ridley and John Boyega set to return?

February 24th, 2022 by Marc Comments

So, we have a new rumour about a potential future Star Wars movie or TV series that could be an interesting idea.

We all know that, love it or hate it, at the end of The Rise of Skywalker Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega) seemed to be the beginning of a new way of the Jedi in the galaxy with other potentials, like the kid seen at the end of *shudder* The Last Jedi, other there still to be discovered and it would make sense that, even though we haven’t seen beyond those movies yet, the next step would be the creation of a New Jedi Order.

Now, in the original Expanded Universe, before Disney scrapped it all to begin from scratch, the New Jedi Order was a series of book that chronicled Luke Skywalker’s efforts to bring together Jedi and create a new, em, order of the Jedi and, while we saw glimpses of some of this idea in the recent Book of Boba Fett as well as The Last Jedi, that story still needs to be told only with Luke, Leia and Han gone, it will have to fall to Rey and Finn.

Now, we have previously heard rumors that Lucasfilm/Disney+ are looking to bring John Boyega back for more Star Wars (here) and, while Daisy Ridley seemed like she didn’t want to return to Star Wars after The Rise of Skywalker (here), we reckon getting the new team back isn’t out of the question.

Now before I go on, I will make my feelings clear here, I liked Ridley and Boyega and their characters – The Force Awakens is still probably my happiest cinema visit ever – but I hated where they went in the second and third movies. I think they both, especially Boyega’s Finn, deserved much better than they got so, while I absolutely have no time for either The Last Jedi or The Rise of Skywalker, I would welcome both actors and, of course, Oscar Isaac as Poe if he was to return, back with open arms.

And it may still happen.

In a recent interview Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy hinted that we may see the new characters back in the future: “Certainly, those are not characters we’re going to forget,

“They will live on, and those are conversations that are going on with the creative team as well.”

That’s interesting for sure but added to what Joanna Robinson, a former writer for Vanity Fair, had to say about a potential New Jedi Order movie or series, we think Rey and Finn are still out there and could be back soon: “I have heard whispers on the wind this is indeed something Lucasfilm is interested in. Just more broadly rebuilding the Jedi Order. A Star Wars story where someone actually tries to rebuild the Jedi religion as one that allows for attachment.”

Now, the attachment issue seems to make a lot of sense, especially when we look at more recent Star Wars stories.

SPOILERS In The Book of Boba Fett we see Grogu leave Luke’s Jedi Academy because he must abandon Din Jarin, his father, and it was strongly hinted that Leia left Luke’s teaching over her attachment to Kylo Ren in Rise of Skywalker – and we all know how those two worked out. SPOILERS END

On top of this, Star Wars Rebels saw Kanan Jarrus, the Jedi at the centre of the tale, fall in love with pilot and Rebellion hero Hera Syndulla and even father a child with her; it was also explored in the Clone Wars canon novel Dark Disciple where Jedi Quinlan Vos fell in love with the assassin Assajj Ventress and questioned his life as a Jedi, so it seems that the folly of the Jedi, which was explored somewhat in the prequels and led to their downfall to the Sith, will form the backbone of the future of Star Wars.

Of course, while the shunning of attachment seems to be leading to the ruination of Luke Skywalker as we have seen in The Last Jedi and the Book of Boba Fett, his love for Mara Jade and the family they go on to have resulted in him being the greatest of all Jedi in the original Expanded Universe, so it seems that fate may now be reserved for Rey and Finn and the New Jedi Order they form.

As I say, the new cast deserve better, let’s hope that, if this happens, they get it.

But the big question is, will we eventually see the Yuuzhan Vong appear? Now, THAT would be something to see.
