While we all sit around waiting to hear when we’ll get to meet up with Miles and Gwen again in Beyond the Spider-verse, we’ll take any little morsel we can of Spidey-related goodness and it seems we have something fun to look forward to soon.
We reported back in April that a new Spider-verse short was set to be shown in France at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival this June but we’ve heard very little since.
At the time we had a short synopsis which read: Miles Morales struggles to balance his responsibilities as a teenager, friend and student while acting as Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood superhero. After a particularly challenging day living with these pressures, Miles experiences a panic attack that forces him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety and learn that reaching out for help can be just as brave an act as protecting his city from evil.
But now Sony has released an all-new synopsis of the short, The Spider Within, which, in fairness, kinda just reaffirms what the earlier one said:
In the short film, Miles has to fight a silent but deadly enemy that many people across the world (and ‘Across the Spider-Verse’) have to deal with as well: Anxiety.
In the story, the teenager starts getting anxious when his responsibilities as a student, friend, and city savior start to pile up.
The pressure ends up making Miles have a panic attack – which in turn forces him to have to confront manifestations of his anxiety.
Lord and Miller say Spider-man: Beyond the Spider-verse will only be released when it’s ready
It’s always nice to see a hero like Miles – like Robert Downey Jnr’s Tony Stark in Iron Man 3 (the best Iron Man movie deal with it) – struggle with something that many of us, if not all, deal with at some stage or another; not a supervillain or an evil plot but rather just the weight and pressure of life that weighs heavy on us all from time-to-time.
My guess is that, with the third movie delayed, we might see this get a fairly large release and reveal in the near future to help tide the fans over until the big theatrical release of Beyond the Spider-verse.
Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing it, to seeing anything in this world, in fact.
