Nicolas Winding Refn releases teaser poster for his Maniac Cop reimagining

Drive and Only God Forgives director Nicolas Winding Refn has shared his teaser poster for his next movie, Maniac Cop, based on the 1988 horror/slasher of the same name.

While not a lot is known about the movie, the original movie, directed by William Lustig, focused on a serial killer in New York who wore a police uniform while stalking his victims. In the end, it’s revealed that the killer was a cop, Matt Cordell, who was framed by city officials, and now, diefigured and supernaturally powered, he’s having revenge on just about anyone who gets in his way.

As expected, the movie tapped into a lot of anxieties about police brutality at the time, so it’s almost a given that this movie will be doing the same, only in a more modern context.

Refn, who has owned the rights and been developing the movie for over a decade, said: “The concept has always appealed to me. In today’s political and social climate, the iconography of ‘Maniac Cop’ alone provokes an immediate, uneasy reaction. I’ve been watching it all unfold while constructing this project in the shadows… waiting. Now, that moment has finally arrived. The time has come to unveil a radical new vision where there is no protection, no safety net, only mayhem.”

Efe Cakarel, founder and CEO of Mubi, who is financing the movie, said: “Maniac Cop in Nicolas’s hands is not a remake. It is a resurrection. Nicolas has one of the most dangerous imaginations in modern cinema, and he is exactly the filmmaker to reawaken something this iconic… this is not nostalgia. It is a new nightmare.”

There’s no release date for Maniac Cop yet but when it’s announced, I will keep you posted.
