WATCH: Hayden Panettiere talks about her return to the Scream franchise, promising fans ‘won’t be disappointed’

July 8th, 2022 by Marc Comments

One of our favourite Scream legacy characters has to be Scream 4’s Kirby, played by Hayden Panettiere, so when we learned a couple of months ago (here) that she was coming back for next year’s Scream 6, we were pretty excited.

The character, who was stabbed in the fourth movie, was long believed to be alive as Wes Craven had plans to resurrect the character had he gone on to make a fourth movie, however, due to his death, the franchise went quiet until the fifth movie earlier this year. Then we learned from the fifth movie itself that the character had indeed survived (here), so we hoped she’d be back.

And now Panettiere has spoken out about coming back, revealing that she had asked to return.

Co-director of Scream (2022) and the upcoming Scream 6 Tyler  Gillet recently confirmed they had ‘reached out’ to the actress (here) about returning, and what the plan was saying: “Again, I think one of the fun things about the universe of these movies is the off-screen story, you know? Mark and Sidney. What’s happened to Kirby? All of that stuff for us, that’s the fuel that kind of exists in the tank once you leave the theater, and we love thinking about who these characters are outside of the stories that we see on screen.”

Now, in a new interview with GMA, the star says she called the directors up and asked “so you don’t want to bring back Kirby, do you?”

However, getting to the bit we all want to know, the host asked the star if Kirby will survive past the opening scene and, after confirming she can’t talk about it but that: “I don’t think anyone is going to be disappointed.”

We’re hearing so many rumours about Kirby’s role in the sequel, from her being the star of the movie – this seemed to gather momentum after the news that Neve Campbell was not returning (here) – to other news that she’s the first big kill of the movie, with the killer targeting previous survivors of the killers become the hunted in the new movie.

Of course, we’re now hearing Campbell IS back, so who knows what this all means… either way, we love Kirby and look forward to seeing her return.
