Cast announced – including Christian Slater – for HBO’s prequel series Dexter: Original Sin

May 24th, 2024 by Marc Comments

Wait, did HBO finally run out of wigs for Michael C Hall? It’s truly the end of an era when a new wig didn’t make Dexter Morgan twenty years younger.

Welp, after giving one of the world’s best TV characters (yes, I know the books came first) not just one but two of the worst endings in TV history, someone has decide that it’s time to go back to the beginning and give him a crap start too.

Sorry, I’m still annoyed about the Lucas article.

Ok, so HBO, after resurrecting Dexter for Dexter: New Blood in 2021 and SPOILER killing him off, have decided to movie ahead with the prequel series that we first reported on in 2023 (here); then, it was called Dexter: New Blood but now it’s Dexter: Original Sin.

The new cast, left, has Patrick Gibson, Christian Slater and Molly Brown playing Dexter, his adoptive father Harry and finally Dexter’s awesome, foul-mouth sister Deb – roles originally played by Michael C Hall, James Remar and Jennifer Carpenter – you can check out the little announcement videos at the bottom of the age.. Clyde Phillips, showrunner on the original Dexter series, is back in the same role for this.

The series is currently planned as a 10-episode event and ‘follows Dexter (Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.’

Dexter: New Blood not happening at Showtime but young Dexter series being considered

Look, I loved Hall as Dexter, for me, he was a kind of psychotic Batman, driven by his killer instinct but forced to try to do good in the only way he could – his story was great and Dexter and Deb were amazing together – although it all got a bit weird near the end – but the original series ended in a terrible way (rushed at the time because they wanted to focus more on up and coming his Ray Donovan) and when he returned in 2021, I had such high hopes, only for them to be dashed again, so I’m a more than a little sceptical when it comes to this. Throw in a new cast – though Slater is still amazing, watch Mr Robot if you doubt it – and it’s hard to be excited especially when it really feels that Dexter’s story was perfectly and completely mapped out in the original series.

I’ll watch it for sure but I’ll not be expecting too much. I hope I’m pleasantly surprised – this time.
