David Ramsey talks his future as Green Lantern in the Arrowverse… and it’s not what you’re thinking

May 18th, 2021 by Marc Comments

Of all the exciting things set up by last year’s Arrowverse event Crisis on Infinite Earths, one of the best was the closing scene, below. revealing that it looked like John Diggle, actor David Ramsey, was finally set to become the galactic hero, Green Lantern.

After the reveal a while before in Arrow that Diggle’s real name was John Stewart, it seemed that his becoming the legendary Lantern was a cert and the scene seemed to cement that fact.

With the news that Ramsey is set to return to the Arrowverse in five episodes this June spread across Batwoman, Superman and Lois, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl (three of which he’s directing), word was that this was set to finally put him in the green suit and give his character the ending (or beginning) the fans had wanted for years (here).

However, the star is throwing some cold water on that rumour in a new interview.

“There was some press that was out there that I’m playing a mystery character on Legends,” the star says, “And from that kind of wording there was an assumption that because obviously Legends has a time ship, and they go through time and space, fans connected that to the Green Lantern Corps… Also, the last time you saw Diggle, he was on his way to Metropolis and was intercepted by a glowing, green box, so it was a logical step in assuming that… But on Legends, there’s a different character altogether. It’s a historic character, a historical Western character.”

Eh, what? So we’re going to meet Diggle’s historic alter-ego? Seems so.

But, when we meet the Diggle we know and love, he’ll be Green Lantern, right?

“We’ve gone to great lengths over the years to make Diggle one of the more grounded characters,” Ramsey says, “Any time he would go fast with Flash, he would throw up, and he was always amazed when he saw someone flying. All these things were kind of otherworldly to him, because he was a very earthbound hero.

“After Crisis, he got back his wife, who was abducted by the Monitor, and he got back his daughter Sara, who was taken out of existence by Flashpoint. So part of Diggle’s story is that the last thing he would want to do right now is receive an invitation from something otherworldly, because he finally has his family back, and he lost his best friend to some otherworldliness.

“So he refused the invitation of whatever was in the box, but there are consequences to that, and that story, what he will do next, is part of what we tell throughout these four episodes.”

Waaaittt… what?

The star, when asked if there’ll be any referencing of the Green Lantern Corps, was pretty sure to ay that no there wasn’t but seems to hint that there may be in the future: “No, we don’t get into that. This is a very, very, very preliminary [look at] what happens from this refusal, and what it means to his destiny. We simply get into the preliminary physical effects of his refusal of whatever it was in that box.”

Diggle refuses the ring and doesn’t become John Stewart of the Green Lantern Corp?! Well, it’s possible that given how much Warners were against Zack Snyder using Green Lantern in his Justice League movie that they won’t allow The CW to use him either (here) but I have a feeling that we will see Diggle become the character… it just might be a while longer coming.

Hopefully.

Are you hoping to see Diggle become Green Lantern in the Arrowverse? Let me know, guys…
