We reported in August last year that the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot/sequel was likely dead in the water (here) but we held out hope that we might still see Sarah Michelle Gellar back as the iconic heroine… but it seems that’s dead in the water too.
Gellar had previously said she felt she was a bit ‘long in the tooth’ for a return (here) but we still held out that hope… but now it seems it’s definitely not going to happen that Buffy will return to our screens to hunt Vampires and train the new generation of slayers.
Asked if she was interested in a return, she told SFX Magazine bluntly: “I’m not.”
Star wants Buffy to appear in What We Do in the Shadows
She went on to explain: “I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up.”
However, to give some hope, the star said she’d be happy to see a new show pick up the stake and continue the story: “I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment..
“I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power.
“But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”
The Buffy spinoffs that were so close to happening
I obviously appreciate her take on this and why she doesn’t want to return but I always saw a new Vampire Slayer show as having Buffy handing leadership to a new Slayer and the show not focusing on Buffy perse and I believe that, if a follow-up ever does happen, Gellar should be involved in some way, even if it’s just the first episode.
But it seems that that will never happen now which may, of course, be a good thing as Buffy is perfect as is and has a start, middle and end that satisfies but perhaps someday we’ll see the story leap into the far-future… I mean, Fray the Vampire Slayer is right there.
Anyways, are you glad Buffy will not be coming back or are you hopeful that someday maybe, just maybe, Buffy Summers will need to save the world again?
