WATCH: Sarah Michelle Gellar now says she’s up for a Buffy return!

We know that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot/sequel/reimaging/whatever has been underway for a while now, with Dolly Parton’s production company behind it, but it was always on the understanding that original star Sarah Michelle Gellar would not be returning.

Back in January 2023, Gellar said of a Buffy return: “I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up… the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”

However, it seemed that in June this year, the Scooby Doo star was thawing to the idea of a Buffy return, especially when it came to Dolly Parton’s involvement, when she said: “I mean, like, if Dolly Parton is going to call me I’m always available to take a phone call from the queen.”

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer revamp (giggle) is back on, says producer Dolly Parton

Now, however, it’s starting to feel like perhaps the thawing is complete and Gellar is all in when it comes to returning as Buffy Summers.

In a new interview for Dexter: Original Sin, the Dexter prequel show that Gellar stars in, on the Drew Barrymore Show, Gellar said that, in an age of classic heroes and characters’ returning, she is starting to see a possible return for The Chosen One.

“It’s funny. I always used to say, ‘No,” ’cause it’s in this bubble and so perfect,” Gellar tells Barrymore, “But watching ‘Sex and the City’ and seeing ‘Dexter’ and realizing there are ways to do it definitely does get your mind thinking.”

When pressed by fellow Guest Christian Slater, Gellar also admits the show doesn’t need to be a prequel but there are so many possibilities in the Buffy universe, the Buffyverse, if you will: “It could be anything. It’s a universe. It makes you realise that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”

Audible brings back Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars for new adventure

Running from 1996 and wrapping in 2003, Buffy the Vampire Slayer became a cultural phenomenon, a show that stood with the likes of The X-Files and Game of Thrones when it came to just how important it was culturally, which is weird because all the guys that loved Buffy are now called sexist when they criticise other shows… weird.

Anyway, Buffy’s return would be very welcome however, how it would feel without the influence of creator and showrunner Josh Whedon – love him or hate – is something we would have to wait a see.

Would you be up for a Buffy reboot, especially with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning? Let us know…

Update: Scooper Daniel RPK is now reporting that talks are underway about bringing Gellar back for a Buffy reboot (here).
