Hulk Vs Wolverine movie rumours are back… could this really happen?

February 2nd, 2021 by Marc Comments

Looks like that old Hulk Vs Wolverine movie rumour is back…

So, you may recall that for some time one of the biggest fan-wishes from Marvel was to see a live-action Hulk Vs Wolverine movie, spanning from the comics and animated movie.

And we do know it hasn’t fallen on deaf ears with Hulk star Mark Ruffalo saying several times that he hopes it will happen as, growing up reading Marvel and X-Men comics, it’s something he’d love to see, not just as an actor but as a fan. In the past he has said that he’s always felt that Hulk’s role in the MCU has never really focused on him or the character, with him existing on the outskirts of the story.

Hugh Jackman too is aware that it’s something that fans want, having said in 2019 after the buy-out of 20th Century Fox by Disney that, had it been seven years earlier, he’d have jumped at the role but now, after the events of Logan, he feels it’s time for someone else to pick up the Wolverine mantle.

That said, just last year, the star added: “I’m trying to reach out to [Ruffalo], but he’s not taking my calls so I guess I’m somehow laying the track for another feud here,” he joked on The Jess Cagle Show.

“Thank goodness we are not in the same room together… I’m laughing because Mark’s a very good friend of mine and I actually haven’t spoken to him about it. He’s absolutely astonishing in [HBO’s I Know This Much is True]… But Wolverine would beat him for sure, let’s just be very clear.”

Now, before we all draw a line under this and file it under ‘never happen’, it’s worth pointing out a few other things.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige has said before that Jackman’s Wolverine is a character he would love to get into the MCU and, indeed, recently it seems that Marvel did indeed reach out to the actor for some reason (here) – although many believe it may have just been to hand the reigns over to the next actor to play the role by appearing as the alternate version of Wolverine, not the MCU one; this would be done via the Multiverse which is currently being set up in WandaVision and will continue in (at least) Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-man 3.

But, I don’t think that’s the case.

We know that X-Men star Evan Peters has been cast in WandaVision (here) with the rumours (and leaked footage – watch at your own risk – at the weekend) suggesting he will, indeed, be Quicksilver – blowing open the Multiverse since the MCU’s version of Quicksilver, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, was killed in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Add to this that we know that Deadpool – part of the 20th Century Fox X-Men universe – is getting a third movie and this one will be firmly set in the MCU (here) and, on top of that, the eyebrow-raising reveal that Patrick Stewart was approached by Kevin Feige about Charles Xavier but has ruled it out: “I met with Kevin Feige a couple of months ago and we had long, long conversations. And there have been moves and suggestions, which include Charles Xavier.

Here’s the problem… If we had not made Logan, then yes, I would probably be ready to get into that wheelchair one more time and be Charles Xavier. But Logan changed all that…”

Of course, he is referring to the fact that Logan saw a natural end for both Jackman’s Wolverine and Stewarts’ Xavier.

However… only last week Ryan Reynolds revealed (here) that Jackman seemed onboard for the then-planned third Deadpool, saying: “Deadpool 3 was gonna be a road trip between Deadpool and Logan. Rashomon style. For real.”

And… adding to all this… a report last week suggested that Marvel and Chris Evans were almost at an agreement to have the star return for three more appearances as Captain America/Steve Rogers and that this would likely tie-in to bringing Wolverine into the MCU (here) – although, full disclosure, Jackman was not mentioned in said reports and it seemed to me, at least, that it was to introduce a new actor in the Logna role. But it might not be the case.

Which brings us to today.

Scooper Mikey Sutton, who has been right in the past about Marvel projects, has reported that a Hulk Vs Wolverine movie will see a new team of heroes introduced into the MCU.

“Marvel Studios doesn’t think Alpha Flight have the makings of a cinematic franchise; there are too many toys in the box to play with and only enough time. But they would like to see them in the Wolverine movie where he fights the Hulk,” claims Sutton.

Alpha Flight in the comics is a superhero team made up of second-tier characters such as Vindicator, Northstar, Aurora, Puck, Sasquatch, Shaman and Snowbird so it makes sense, with Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men on the horizon, Marvel may not want to bring in another big team of heroes… that said, introducing them like this would mean they exist and can be dipped into and out of as Marvel pleases or, if they’re a hit, they could become the next Guardians of the Galaxy.

So, with all this said, will we see a Wolverine Vs Hulk movie in the future? I’d say that the chance are that yes, we absolutely will… I just hope it happens soon enough and is good enough to bring Hugh Jackman back one last time because all the evidence does seem to point towards it being a genuine possibility.

Am I on my own on this? Let me know.

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife.
