So, we have speculated for some time that Sony and Marvel may be heading towards bringing us a live-action Into the Spider-verse movie, most likely featuring previous Spider-man actors Toby Maguire, Andrew Garfield and current Spidey Tom Holland.
In fact, as recently as May past we reported that we heard rumblings that the three Spider-man stars were in talks to all come back for a single movie (here) and in June last year Sony’s Amy Pascal said that a live-action Spider-verse movie was “a possibility” (here) when it became apparent that the Sony movies were, in fact, now connected to the MCU movies (here).
Then, when we heard that WandaVision and Doctor Strange into the Multiverse would, much like DC’s Flash movie will for their franchise, open the who Marvel universe and very possibly bring in different versions of familiar characters, we hoped that maybe, just maybe, the Spider-verse dream was alive and well.
And then last night when we reported that Jamie Foxx was joining the MCU, returning as Electro (here), who he previously played in the Andrew Garfield-led Amazing Spider-man 2 we – and many others – suddenly had a new hope that perhaps this will acknowledge that this Electro may be the same Electro we met before and may have come over to the MCU from his previous universe and, of this is the case, then that may mean the other Spider-men are out there too, waiting to come into the new universe too or, at the very least, meet the new characters.
Don’t forget too that JK Simmons returned as J Jonah Jameson in Spider-man: Far From Home too, so that’s a connection (technically) already established to the Toby Maguire Spider-man movies too.
So, that brings us to the crux of the conversation.
During the PR circuit for Far From Home stars Tom Holland, Zandeya and Jacob Batalon were asked by an interviewer if they would like to see previous Spider-men coming into the MCU via an Into the Spider-verse type event and, while they evade the question and greet it with good humor, there’s definitely something in Holland’s reaction that makes me – and the lovely Twitter user who dug the clip out – believe that he knows something that the fans don’t… yet.
In fact, the interviewer actually asks Holland of his silence is an admission that he knows something.
Anyway, watch it yourself, and let me know… but my Spider-sense is tingling and I really believe we’re going to see at least one of the previous Spider-men in the MCU soon.
